First-year beautification, Rockland, Maine
It was difficult to choose the site to begin the garden.
There are two, very large maple trees at the back of this very small yard, which cast shade. There is also the problem of the septic tank location. And, while flowers were a must-have, an area for vegetables was equally important.
I decided to begin the garden immediately in front of the deck, in a pattern that would give fluidity in a very small space.
While I made mistakes that will be corrected in 2007, I was thrilled with the lushness of the plantings, and rather surprised by their growth, as the soil was not amended at all. Not for the flowers, nor for the vegetables.
What is most needed now, is a view-blocking installation at the rear of the garden, and in that, I am stumped.
