Love it! This is some I'd like to do in my front yard, to get rid of the grass.

The low orange "roses" are actually moss roses or portulaca. The red and white roses on the lower right corner are Rainbow Sorbet (floribunda). The yellow roses next to them are the David Austin roses Jude the Obscure. The pink roses on the upper right are David Austin's Gertude Jeykll. The apricot roses on the upper left corner are Apricot Nectar (floribunda) and the lower apricot ones to their right are David Austin's Ambridge Rose. There's lots of other roses there (180 in the garden) but you can't see them all in the picture.

What part of the country are you in? I live in South Texas and our roses down here look really bad right now. They will be looking better in about another month if the weather cools down a little.

Beautiful garden. How tall are your obelisks?

Lilies of the FIeld, I live in Northern Michigan - the roses have loved the cooler weather, but frosty nights are beginning to slow them down for winter now. Fnboyd, most of my obelisks are 6 to 7 feet tall. I got them through Jackson & Perkins, although my husband built all the rest of my arbors and fences - he also did the brick work on the walkways. My hero!

This is lovely. Gives me an idea for my front yard. I love roses and they would do great in that location.

I'm from Maryland myself and I'd be a fool and a liar if I said Texas is home to lavish foliage, and a celebration of undergrowth as well as overgrowth. I'm afraid not. Here one must be as tough as the elements to maintain aesthetic beauty in one's environment(outdoors, that is).I'd leave and go back to the northeast but I've got my family planted here and I'm afraid my son would go into shock if I uprooted him.

Your garden is so beautiful, I love the pavers and the bird bath design.

Awesome! I would be in heaven surrounded by so much beauty.
You may know the anwser to my question since you have such expertise with roses. I'd like to know if climbing roses have to climb? Is it possible to keep them as a shrub?

Posted by meave on 2008-09-18, 12:35:47 Offensive  Report this as offensive.

Meave, because I live in a colder climate (zone 5) a number of my climbers actually grow as shrubs because they lose so much cane over the winter. You can prune climbers to keep them shorter and bushier, although some will insist on throwing those long canes (like New Dawn). I have a number of David Austin English roses and some of them also want to climb - I let some climb on arbors, etc. but prune others into shrub shapes and sizes.

A beautiful example of a rose garden. No grass I like that I have none either. You should be very proud.

How beautiful! I don't know that I could force myself to leave it and go to work! I love the comment about getting rid of grass in the front yard! That's been my mission for two years and I am almost there!

Racheal, I chuckled when I saw your comment that you were afraid you wouldn't be able to force yourself to go to work. You see, I had one spring morning, after working for almost 35 years, that I went into the garden and thought "I don't want to leave it for work every day any more." That was the day I decided to retire, and it was the garden that got me there (because I really did enjoy my job). I'm loving retirement and the time in my rose garden.
