What in the heck is this plant?Weird plant that my mom gave me. Uploaded by plantstud on 2009-08-01, 01:16:09 into Landscape Design, Name That Plant, Ponds, Spring Fever COMMENTSFrom the picture, it looks like it's 5 or 6 feet tall. Most of them never make it more than 2 feet. It's called Dracaena marginata. I'm not sure if it has a common name. When it is growing well with enough (not too much) water and light, the edges of the dark green leaves are red. It is a member of the Lily family, probably related to Yucca which also has some species (i.e. Joshua Tree) which develop woody stems. If you give it a little more light and more water, letting it dry out quite a bit between waterings, the leaves should stay on longer and you'll have bigger tufts of leaves at the ends of the stems. You might try nicking one of the stems about a foot or two above the pot. Nothing major, just a small injury. This might allow the end growth to continue to live while encouraging a dormant bud or two to start growing along the bare stem. If it works, you can try another. Don't do too much damage or you'll kill that stem.
